One of the reasons why I wear a mask is illustrated by the above graph from John Hopkins University and Statistica. This graph says so much to me. It says that wearing masks has worked for the European Union. It doesn’t matter what politics they have, they are living life again and not getting sick. I would like to get to that point also.
I Wear Because It Makes Sense
I wear a mask for a multitude of reasons. In fact, it truly is baffling that this is such a big, divisive issue. To me, it seems such a “common sense” sort of thing. Let me be very clear, I neither wear a mask nor refuse to wear a mask because a governor or any other leader tells me to wear one.
I Wear Because I Care
Very simply, I wear a mask because I care about others. Personally, I don’t want anyone in my family either dying or becoming very sick with COVID-19. Additionally, I don’t want anyone in my family to become a spreader. Even more importantly, I care about my community, my country, and my world.
It’s my pleasure to wear a mask if there’s any chance of me helping to save a life. Being slightly uncomfortable by wearing a mask while out of the house is irrelevant compared to saving our economy and someone’s life. I need others to feel that way because they have my family’s lives in their hands. My family ranges from a 98 year-old grandmother all the way to 1 year old twin grand children and they need you to wear a mask too.
It is obvious to even the biggest of mask protesters that the world is pretty much a mess right now. All of our economies are in shambles. My belief is that it would be so much better to recover as quickly as possible than to continue in this half-open-half-closed situation. We can accomplish this easily if we all practice good social distancing and wear a mask.
The Science Is Clear
There is a mountain of evidence that makes the science clear and unequivocal: Wearing masks and social distancing work to slow the spread of COVID-19. Not only is the science clear, it is common sense. We are all familiar with the phrase “Cover your cough.” We see signs about it in all medical and assisted living facilities. That is all we are being asked to do. Cover our cough.
The reason that is not enough now is that this new virus is so contagious. It can spread just by speaking or breathing, and sometimes we cough and can’t cover it in time. So, to slow the spread, we use a mask to make sure our germs and coughs are covered.
Wearing A Mask Works
There are many places in the world now that have largely recovered and are now opening things up. These countries and their citizens recognized the need and behaved responsibly and with compassion towards others. As a result, countries like Italy and Spain, which were hit terribly hard by this disease, are now able to enjoy more of a sense of normalcy.
For those who say the virus is so small a mask doesn’t work, try sneezing on your window screen and see what it looks like. It is all about reducing the risk, at the very least, and I will be grateful for that..
Give Them Time To Develop A Vaccine
The only thing that will eliminate the risk is an effective vaccine, which all countries and thousands of scientists are working on. Let us give them time to develop a vaccine so we truly can get back to “how things were.” This process will absolutely take another year. We can save so many lives if we all wear a mask.
We Wear Because We Care
My family and I choose to wear masks. We wear a mask because we care about our family, friends, community, country, and world. We don’t have to be told to do this. We have been doing it since it became obvious that this was the only way we were going to knock this monster down. I truly pray your family does not suffer from this disease. My heart goes out to those millions who have lost loved ones. Please wear a mask.
