Downtown Las Vegas

Union Pacific Railroad auctioned land in Downtown Las Vegas on May 5, 1905. That is the day Las Vegas considers its birthday. For the 100 year birthday, a revitalization program was started. Now, 15 years later, it’s amazingly different than it was.

Downtown Las Vegas was the center of the glitz and glamour until the 1990s when the Las Vegas Strip started opening 2-3 mega-resorts a year, creating a perpetual motion machine that made the city ” Boomtown.” In the 1990s, the suburbs in the valley were growing to house the businesses and workers on the Las Vegas Strip. With expansion came an infrastructure boom, and downtown was left on the struggle on its own.

Revitalization

Since 2005, The Fremont Street Experiencerevitalizing downtown has been a major tourist draw, and with it, the rest of downtown has changed. There are now 5 mixed-use buildings in the area combining retail, commercial and residential. The new residential help the businesses in the area that used to only cater to businesses during the day and had no nighttime business.

The Regional Justice Center, Clark County Government Complex, Federal Courthouse,  Zappo’s, and Premium Outlet Center are a few examples of non-gaming, larger employers located downtown. Symphony Park, World Market Center, IRS, and Cleveland Clinic have all joined the mix of the new downtown.
